MindTap is a shell around hundreds of different textbooks. The same platform serves an accounting course, an anatomy course and an intro psychology course, and the questions look nothing alike. A Cengage MindTap AI has to work out which subject it is in before it can answer anything reliably.
Subject grounding first
Questions in MindTap are often short and stripped of context, and the same term means different things in different disciplines. Course context is read off the page and attached to every request, so the model answers inside the right field rather than defaulting to the most common general meaning of a term.

Requests start on a fast model and escalate to a stronger one when a call fails or is rate limited, with a premium tier available at the top for Elite. Why the cache comes second
A hashed answer cache is genuinely useful for a question hundreds of students see identically, and worthless for anything edited locally. The Cengage MindTap AI answers fresh by default and uses the cache only to accelerate questions already confirmed correct, which keeps a stale entry from quietly becoming your answer.
What is sent and what is not
Question text and any cropped image go out for answering. Your Cengage login does not, because the extension runs inside your authenticated session and never handles credentials. Cache entries are hashed question signatures rather than text, and requests are identified by an anonymous UID plus your license key.
Where it stops
Interactive simulations, video-response activities and anything needing a file upload are not automated. The Cengage MindTap AI answers what it can read and says so when it cannot, which is preferable to filling a plausible guess into a graded activity.
