Wiley Bot: Automating Alta and Assisting WileyPLUS
Wiley courseware comes in two shapes, and they need different treatment. Knewton Alta, the Wiley adaptive product, gets a full autopilot. WileyPLUS assignments get Snap AI, the universal crop solver. The SmarterBook Wiley bot is honest about which is which rather than promising one experience for both.
Alta gets the full autopilot
If your course runs on Alta, the extension has native support: it reads the question, fills the answer, and advances through the adaptive set unattended. That covers all four Alta question types, including the numeric blanks that need the platform math keypad.
- Multiple choice through native radio components
- Select all that apply via the checkbox groups
- Numeric entry typed on the platform keypad
- Dropdown blanks matched by option text
- Speed control and a configurable miss rate
WileyPLUS works through Snap AI
WileyPLUS itself does not have a dedicated content script, so there is no unattended run there. What you get instead is Ctrl+Shift+Z on any WileyPLUS page: drag a box around the question, get the answer in the panel, place it yourself. It is manual, it is fast, and it works on accounting problems, chemistry structures and anything else the page renders.
Pacing on the Alta side
Because Alta extends an assignment when you miss, tempo and miss rate both matter. Speed is set to slow, normal or fast and scales every step of the run, and B Student Mode applies a miss rate to multiple choice, select all and dropdown questions while leaving numeric entry alone.
Which one are you on
If the URL is a Knewton Alta learning page you have the full Wiley bot autopilot. If you are inside WileyPLUS, use Snap AI. Both come with the same license and there is nothing extra to install for either.
ORION and adaptive practice
Wiley ORION adaptive practice behaves like Alta in spirit but sits inside WileyPLUS, so it is Snap AI territory rather than autopilot territory. Crop the question, read the answer, place it. Slower than a full run but faster than working through a practice set that adapts every time you miss.
Tier notes
Starter covers Snap AI and the Alta solver, which is the practical core for Wiley. Pro adds the behaviour layer that makes an unattended Alta run look natural. Elite adds the Hive-Mind cache and harvests Alta post-submit explanations.
Wiley runs two very different products under one brand, and a Wiley bot that pretends otherwise will disappoint half its users. Full automation where it exists, a fast manual solver where it does not, and a clear statement of which you are getting.
