Pearson MyLab AI: Surviving a Platform That Keeps Changing

MyLab is the least stable platform SmarterBook supports. Pearson ships markup changes without warning, the different MyLab products do not share a layout, and every exercise has student-specific values. Accuracy here is mostly an extraction problem, not a reasoning problem.

Eight layers of fallback

The MyLab content script resolves the question region, the options and the input fields through eight successive selector strategies. If Pearson renames a class the first strategy fails and the next one takes over, so a change that would kill a single-selector tool degrades to a slower path instead of a blank panel.

Reading regenerated values correctly

Because coefficients differ per student, misreading one number produces a confidently wrong answer. Values are pulled from the live exercise rather than from any cached copy, and anything visual is passed to a vision model instead of being guessed at from surrounding text.

  • Live extraction of per-student values
  • Vision for graphs, plots and stat tables
  • Model chain escalates instead of erroring
  • Answers formatted for the MyLab input

Formatting to what MyLab accepts

MyLab inputs are strict about form: exact fractions where it asked for exact, rounding to the stated decimal place, no units in a bare numeric box. Responses are prompted for value-only output and cleaned before entry, because a correct value in the wrong shape scores the same as a wrong one.

Alpha, and honest about it

The Pearson MyLab AI is marked Alpha because Pearson changes things faster than any selector set can be maintained perfectly. It handles standard MyLab Math and Statistics reliably and can need a manual assist on discipline-specific builds. That is the accurate description, not a marketing one.

Privacy

Exercise text and cropped figures are sent for answering. Your Pearson credentials never leave the browser, because the extension runs inside your existing session. Cached entries are hashed signatures rather than exercise text, and requests carry only an anonymous identifier and your license key.

When to expect a manual assist

Graph-plotting exercises where you place points, number-line drags and interactive geometry are answered in the panel rather than filled. On discipline-specific MyLab builds the Pearson MyLab AI can also fall back to showing the answer instead of entering it, which is the intended degradation rather than a failure.

On MyLab the difficulty is getting a clean read of an exercise nobody standardised, with values generated just for you. Layered extraction plus live reading plus strict formatting is what a Pearson MyLab AI needs, and it is what this one does.
