Knewton Alta Bot for Adaptive Assignment Sets

Alta is Wiley adaptive courseware, which means the assignment does not end when you have done the questions, it ends when Alta decides you have demonstrated mastery. Miss a few and it extends. The SmarterBook Knewton Alta bot works that loop for you across all four question types Alta uses.

All four question types, filled automatically

Alta is a React application that mixes its own components with embedded Learnosity questions, so the same assignment can contain four completely different input mechanisms. Each one has its own handler.

  • Multiple choice through the native radio components
  • Select all that apply through the checkbox groups
  • Fill in the blank typed on the platform math keypad
  • Dropdown blanks matched by option text, since Alta randomises the order

The numeric entry problem

Alta free-response answers go into a MathQuill field, and typing into those with ordinary keyboard events is unreliable. The bot presses the platform keypad instead, character by character, which is deterministic for numeric answers. Answers are cleaned of units and stray words first so the field receives only the value it will accept.

Pacing and deliberate misses

A speed setting of slow, normal or fast scales every step of the run, so an assignment can look deliberate rather than instant. B Student Mode introduces a miss rate you control across multiple choice, select all and dropdown questions, and never on numeric entry where a wrong value is more costly. That keeps a set from coming back perfect.

Mastery is the goal, not just completion

Because Alta extends assignments when you miss, a run that misses too often makes more work rather than less. Keep the miss rate modest, let the Knewton Alta bot clear the routine questions, and spend your own attention on the topics you are actually being assessed on later.

Top frame only

Alta loads a hidden Learnosity relay frame alongside its own React components, and the extension deliberately runs in the top frame only. That avoids duplicated panels and mis-scoped question reads, and it is why the panel appears once no matter how many frames the page loads.

Coverage status

Multiple choice, select all, numeric fill-in and dropdown blanks are all auto-filled and verified. Anything Alta renders as a free-form expression or a graph interaction is answered in the panel for you to enter. The Knewton Alta bot card ships with an alpha badge for that reason, and the coverage is stated rather than implied.

Adaptive courseware is designed to keep going until you comply, which makes it the definition of busywork. A Knewton Alta bot that handles radios, checkboxes, the math keypad and randomised dropdowns gets you to the end of the set without a lost evening.
